Helen asks…

my computer has been infected by the aprotectedpage and related virus’ McAfee doesnt seem to be able to remove

Can anybody suggest a reliable virus removal program/software
that i can download ?

softwareguru answers:

You have a Smitfraud infection. Most people like to hear the easy answers, So I will give that first.

SUPERAntiSpyware has performed well at removing Smitfraud in my tests. For a download link, and complete configuration and usage instructions, visit this link at my site:

If it fails, please follow these instructions…

Download SmitfraudFix:

Follow instructions in the “CLEAN” section on that page

process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a “RiskTool”. It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between “good” and “malicious” use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

After you run Smitfraud fix run AVG AntiSpyware

Download AVG Anti-Spyware:

Click Run to start the download and once again to start the installation process.
Select your language and click OK
Click Next, I Agree, Next, Install and then Finish
You will now be bought to the main screen. This is the screen you will be brought to if you click the AVG Anti-Spyware icon that has been placed on your desktop.

Automatic updates are on by default for the remainder of the 30 day trial period. After the 30 day trial expires you will have to manually update AVG Anti-Spyware (to use the manual scanner, which remains after the trial expires) or purchase a subscription to continue to receive automatic updates.

Once your trial expires, AVG Anti-Spyware will have to be manually updated by clicking Update on the main screen and selecting Start Update.

Resident Shield

AVG Anti-Spyware Resident Shield is on by default and will offer active spyware protection for the remainder of the 30 day trial period. After the 30 day trial expires, the Resident Shield will no longer be actively protecting your computer from spyware threats. To continue to receive protection from Resident Shield, you must purchase a subscription to AVG Anti-Spyware.

I suggest running only one active spyware guard. If you already have an active guard, you could turn off Resident Shield from the main screen, under the “Status icon” by clicking Change State next to “Resident Shield.”

Alternately, you could disable your current spyware guard and sample Resident Shield for the 30 day trial period.

From the main screen, click the Scanner icon.
Click the Settings tab.
Click “Recommended Actions” and then select “Quarantine”.
Under “Reports” select Automatically generate report after every scan
Reports could be found by clicking the “Report icon” on the main screen.

Resident Shield

From the main screen, click the Shield icon.
Check the box to Remove tracking cookies automatically

Running a Manual Scan
From the main screen, click the Scanner icon.
Select Complete System Scan to begin scanning
Do not use the computer during the scan, it may interfere with AVG’s ability to detect.
When the scan has completed, any threats that AVG Anti-Spyware has detected will be displayed.
The recommended action should be set to Quarantine. If not click Recommended Action and select Quarantine.
Click the Apply all actions button at the bottom.
When AVG Anti-Spyware has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.

Run Panda ActiveScan

Panda ActiveScan:

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button

A new window will open…click the Check Now button

Enter your Country

Enter your State/Province

Enter your e-mail address and click send

Select either Home User or Company

Click the big Scan Now button

Allows the ActiveX component to install

It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)

When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan

When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

If AVG AS fails to remove something or Panda Active Scan detects something (Panda does not clean, it only detects) and you need further assistance, you can reach me at:

Ken asks…

What kind of antivirus software do computer techs use?

I know that companies like staples and bestbuy, and even smaller pc repair businesses do virus removal. What kind of programs do they use?

softwareguru answers:

They are just like us insofar as they have their own favourites. I know at least on big name company who use Vipre but no doubt others will use an alternative.
