Your Questions About Virus Removal Mac

Richard asks…

PC Virus on a Mac Removal?

Ok I was looking for a website similar to youtube.com on google search and I clicked on one particular website name and a screen that looked like a PC file directory shows up on my Mac and it has these status bars filling as if doing a scan telling my computer has viruses or malware and that I need to get their product to protect my computer. I clicked off the window and then noticed my default browsing settings would keep sending me back to that same website after I tried to go back to google with a new window.

I have run 4 different Mac virus scans and each come up with nothing, but I’m fairly sure this thing is still in my computer somewhere. The question is where do I go to get into the cache to see.

This has been a real hassle because whatever it is it has messed up my World of Warcraft login capabilities and I have been flagged by Blizzard for allowing 3rd party spammers to advertise with my accounts in the game which is not true.

How can I fix this?

softwareguru answers:

You need to clean up your temporary files, caches. Particularly the browser cache. This will end the malware ad.

EDIT: If you switch to the Firefox browser and install the addon NoScript, you will not have this type of malware and many more attempting to infect your Mac by just visiting a site. There are thousands of sites where malware lurks to infect
your computer. Many of the most popular sites have pages with malware lurking on them.

Note if a scan detects a problem but is unable to remove, start the computer in safe mode with the internet line disconnected and run a full scan.

In severe cases your system restore files will also be infected. In these cases you will need to turn off system restore to prevent malware hiding in the system restore files and reinfecting the computer during removal or during a future system restore. Turning off system restore deletes the system restore files.

Right click on “my computer”> Properties > System Restore Tab > Check box turn of system restore

After the malware is removed turn on system restore.
