Your Questions About Virus Removal Mac

Richard asks…

PC Virus on a Mac Removal?

Ok I was looking for a website similar to on google search and I clicked on one particular website name and a screen that looked like a PC file directory shows up on my Mac and it has these status bars filling as if doing a scan telling my computer has viruses or malware and that I need to get their product to protect my computer. I clicked off the window and then noticed my default browsing settings would keep sending me back to that same website after I tried to go back to google with a new window.

I have run 4 different Mac virus scans and each come up with nothing, but I’m fairly sure this thing is still in my computer somewhere. The question is where do I go to get into the cache to see.

This has been a real hassle because whatever it is it has messed up my World of Warcraft login capabilities and I have been flagged by Blizzard for allowing 3rd party spammers to advertise with my accounts in the game which is not true.

How can I fix this?

softwareguru answers:

You need to clean up your temporary files, caches. Particularly the browser cache. This will end the malware ad.

EDIT: If you switch to the Firefox browser and install the addon NoScript, you will not have this type of malware and many more attempting to infect your Mac by just visiting a site. There are thousands of sites where malware lurks to infect
your computer. Many of the most popular sites have pages with malware lurking on them.

Downloader virus removal

If you follow all the following steps it should get rid of your problem and prevent future problems. All programs listed are free.
Update your Full Time (Active) antivirus and run a full scan.

If you do not have active virus protection, install only one. All are excellent.

AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition
Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista
Free antivirus – avast! 4 Home Edition
Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista
Update your Full Time (Active) spyware protection and run a full scan. If you do not have active spyware protection, install:

Windows Defender (Included with Vista)
Install the following four programs and run weekly or at least monthly. You need all four. They are not a substitute for full time spyware and virus protection. They will greatly increase your protection. Install and run now.

Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)
Windows 2000 (Pro and Server), Windows Server 2003, Windows XP (Home and Pro), Windows Vista (32-bit)

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)
Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista
Do not enable Tea Timer and SDHelper
After installation: update + scan + immunize

SpywareBlaster 3.51: Update then open and click “enable all protection”.
Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP NOT FOR VISTA

SUPERAntiSpyware free version: (update + scan)
Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/2003 Server/Vista

Install either one not both:

McAfee Site Advisor: Internet Explorer and Firefox

Firefox: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista, Linux and Mac OS X
McAfee SiteAdvisor helps protect you from all kinds of Web-based security threats including spyware, adware, spam, viruses, browser exploits, and online scams.

XP SP2, XP ProX64 SP1, Win 2000 SP4, NOT FOR VISTA
TrendProtect is a FREE browser plug-in that helps you avoid Web pages with unwanted content and hidden threats.
Note if a scan detects a problem but is unable to remove, start the computer in safe mode with the internet line disconnected and run a full scan.

In severe cases your system restore files will also be infected. In these cases you will need to turn off system restore to prevent malware hiding in the system restore files and reinfecting the computer during removal or during a future system restore. Turning off system restore deletes the system restore files.

Right click on “my computer”> Properties > System Restore Tab > Check box turn of system restore

After the malware is removed turn on system restore.
