Your Questions About Virus Protection

Another question about virus protection?

on a computer. I have “heard” that you can even have the very best spyware protection on your computer and a virus can still get through. How is that? I mean….does that mean the people sending them are MORE intelligent than the others? I don’t understand HOW one is sent through (that’s ok as that information doesn’t need to be published and would never do that anyway) but my son does have really good spyware on his computer and his still crashed once because of a bad virus through a Limewire song. He built his computer and is smart with them. I’m on a work computer and wouldn’t want to be responsible for anything coming through here anyway. What is the percentage of protection from different spyware programs?

softwareguru answers:

You have viruses and spyware confused. They are 2 completly different infections.

A computer needs both an anti-virus program and an anti-spyware program for complete protection.

No single anti-virus or anti-spyware can ever “catch” every malware. New viruses and spyware are created and released every hour of every day. It can take up to several hours to several days for the protection programs to catch up with these new malwares.

A top rated anti-virus program (such as Kaspersky) will detect and stop about 99% of CURRENTLY KNOWN viruses. Some of the free anti-virus programs such as AVG will only detect about 90%.

The same is true with NEW viruses, Kaspersky will issue new virus definations almost every hour. The poorer programs will only update once a day and never on weekends!

Anti-spywares programs are much the same, but they tend to have lower detection rates then anti-viruses. Most people have at least 2 anti-spyware scanners installed. One will often catch what the other one misses.

is there any virus protection software that is as good or better than Mcafee for Windows XP. My Mcafee has been being retarded lately

softwareguru answers:

Both of these are free.

AVG provides you with all that you need to be completely protected: including a tool for scanning your hard drive and e-mail, as well as a real-time shield to prevent infections.

*Never install more than one anti-virus on your PC, as they may conflict with each other. On the other hand, its always good to install more than one anti-spyware.
