Robert asks…

How do i speed up my computer for free?

What is a really great way to speed up my computerer without spending any money at all. My computer is really slow and i would love to see it running smooth and fast. Any help is appreciateded.

softwareguru answers:

Hi Morgan,

Here are a couple of suggestions I use regularly to keep my laptop running in top shape. Hopefully they will help you get yours in a better condition.

1. Disk Cleanup – Go to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
Once this opens, you can safely select all components in the list of items to be cleaned. Click through and run this tool and it will clean up a lot of your excess memory and spare disk utilization files that are unnecessary.

2. Deleting Temp files.
Open My Computer > C: Drive > Windows
In this directory, there is a folder called “Temp”. Open this folder and delete all contents (if any).
In this directory, there is also a folder called “Prefetch”, which contains a lot of cache files for faster access. However, once the amount becomes too much, it can do more damage than good. Delete all of these files also. (Both of these directories do not house any vital information, thus making it safe to delete all of the contents of both.

3. Depending on your operating system, you can run a Disc Defragmentor, which is an application built into Windows. On Vista or Windows 7, this will be useless since the Operating System does this action intermittently throughout your sessions.

4. Systems can sometimes become slow due to malware. I suggest the following software. Download, install and run a “Complete Scan”. This software is among the best for malware removal. (You will find a lot of support if you research it). Download the free version, as it does just as well as the paid version, with the exception of not getting real-time scanning support.

5. Remove any unnecessary programs you no longer use. This goes double for any type of toolbars you may have installed for your web browser(s). Go to Start Menu > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Once here, it is safe to say that if it is anything you do not recall using and is not marked as “Framework” or “Microsoft” or “Driver” can be removed without question. However, if you ARE questioning it, it’s probably best to leave it be.

I will check back on this post over the next few days if you have any questions, feel free to respond and I will answer. I hope some of this helps. Without having the machine in hand, it’s hard to go into the more detailed cleaning methods, but hopefully some of this will give you some relief.

Richard asks…

How do you get rid of viruses on your computer?

I opened an email and I think it had a virus because now everytime I started my computer, I have popups and antiviruse screens wanting me to purchase their software. Is there a free software that I can download to get rid of these viruses?

softwareguru answers:

Next time we need to know exactly what the pop up says, the web page it refers you to, and the product it tries to sell you. This will allow us to determine the correct removal tool needed.

You are infected with spyware/adware, not a virus.

Note if a scan detects a problem but is unable to remove, start the computer in safe mode with the internet line disconnected and run a full scan.

In severe cases your system restore files will also be infected. In these cases you will need to turn off system restore to prevent malware hiding in the system restore files and reinfecting the computer during removal or during a future system restore. Turning off system restore deletes the system restore files.

Right click on “my computer”> Properties > System Restore Tab > Check box turn of system restore

After the malware is removed turn on system restore.
