Donna asks…

i have a mac and i have that little pop up window over top trusted sites that “it is a banned sight” and i didn’tt buy it or anything like that. Please if you have any suggestions on to which to remove this unwanted program, please!

softwareguru answers:

You don’t need anti-spyware software because its a mac, so first thing, don’t fall for that. If its giving you pop-ups than thats a little more concerning. If your using Safari then Click on Safari in the menu bar and click “Reset Safari…” that should clear out whatever is doing that. If your using Firefox then click on tools under the menu bar and then click “Clear Private Data…” and that should clear anything in there out. If it continues use another browser to see if that fixes the problem.

William asks…

Do I need anti-virus software for my Mac G4?

I have heard macs cant get a virus and do not need antivirus software. If thats incorrect, can anyone recommend a free download? Thanks

softwareguru answers:

Per Apple:

“Do I need virus software for a Mac?

No. While no computer connected to the Internet will ever be 100 percent immune to viruses and spyware, the Mac is built on a solid UNIX foundation and designed with security in mind. The Mac web browser, Safari, alerts you whenever you’re downloading an application — even if it’s disguised as an innocent picture or movie file. And Apple continually makes free security updates available for Mac owners. You can even have them download automatically.”

The instance cited in the other answer is not a virus, but rather a Javascipt exploit, that the Mac user had to launch to activate it.

While there is not currently even one single virus “in the wild” that can attack a Mac, it doesn’t hurt to have an anti-virus app lying in wait for the first one, when/if it ever shows, and the best one is free for the download.
