softwareguru answers:

As your symptoms are non-specific, I’ve gone for broke. I recommend you uninstall your Malwarebytes’ in case it’s become corrupted, and because I’d like you to install it as part of this procedure…and if you already had it installed, it would cause additional problems.

Try this:

Firstly, boot your computer to the Safe Mode menu screen. You do this by repeatedly pressing F8 as soon as you boot up. Once there, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking. Continue to boot from there, by pressing Enter. You will now see some drivers being loaded. There will be a pause at some point. This usually lasts for no more than 30 seconds.

If that’s successful, open your browser, copy and paste this link into the address bar and press Enter. It’s a direct download for RKill. Save it to your desktop, then run it. When it’s running, your desktop icons will vanish for a few seconds. When the notepad report is displayed, just close it. You may now delete RKill if you wish:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe

RKill SHOULD HAVE STOPPED THE INFECTION FROM RUNNING, BUT IT WON’T HAVE REMOVED IT.

Now open your browser and download TDSSKiller.exe from Kaspersky Lab. It’s tiny, and takes just a minute to run. It hunts down and kills a specific family of rootkits.

Regardless of the results, open your browser and copy and paste this link into the address bar, and press Enter. It’s a direct download for the free version of Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM). Install it, get updates and run a full scan (still in Safe Mode):

http://www.myantispyware.com/mbam

If the problem still exists, download and run the free Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool:

http://www.kaspersky.com/antivirus-removal-tool?form=1

You should now delete TDSSKiller.exe and the Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, as updated versions are often made available. Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware can be easily uninstalled, should you wish to do so, but it may prove to be beneficial in the future.

After this, try rebooting normally. If that’s successful, I recommend you run another full scan with MBAM. It will detect malware that wasn’t running in Safe Mode.

Once you’re infection-free..

This is the set-up I use on my PC:

I have the free version of Avast Antivirus, along with the free version of Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (which you should now have) and the free Comodo firewall (Comodo Internet Security). If you decide to download Comodo, use the “Customize Installer” option mentioned in the techsupportalert link below, and untick the antivirus. You only want to install the firewall. It’s advisable to adjust some Comodo settings, in order to avoid conflicts with Avast. I used the settings recommended here:

http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-install-comodo-firewall.htm

Here are the download links:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

Paul asks…

Virus trigger removal?

I want a free program that can remove virus trigger, I have spybot search and destroy, but it doesn’t detect or remove such of trojan.

I spend money on a spyware program before, which was supposed to be one time charge, and you have the full program, but the company change owners so I got stuck with the regular program, and if I want full again I gotta pay for.

So I don’t want to spend my money just because one thing that I can’t get removed, I’m sure that there is some free programs out there that could fix this.

I would search myself, but after I got this all the sites I search for seems suspicious, and I really don’t want things to get worst.

Trials are fine as long as they have removal options. I download one program that dectected the files, but wanna me to pay for in order to eliminate them.

GREAT antivirus software for scanning and virus removal?

My friend is currently getting alerts that there are multiple viruses on his computer, but he has no virus removal software. We really dont want to spend a whole lot on software, but we do want good quality. I’ve heard that Norton and McAfee do not rid your computer of the virus, they only put it under quarentine.

So what’s some real good software that:
1. Is affordable, or free. (Subscriptions NOT preferred)
2. Detects viruses, cookies, spyware, anything harmful.
3. REMOVES these viruses completely from your computer.

:] All help is appreciated.

System Security version 4.52 virus removal?

My netbook is infected with the virus and although I have downloaded the System Security removal tool and Maleware Bytes anti-maleware, I can not open them because the virus says that the files are infected and will not let me open them. I have taken my computer to get fixed once before because of Antivirus 2009 virus and all they did was use maleware bytes. SO can anyone help me so I can get past the virus so I can run the removal programs?

softwareguru answers:

Try starting the computer in safe mode with networking by tapping f8 as the system i starting up and choosing the safe mode with networking option.

Once in safe mode update and run MBAM. You may have to rename mbam-setup.exe to something else because certain viruses target it and prevent it from being executed.

Free computer anti-virus and removal online?

Does anyone use any good free programs for anti virus and/or removal? If so I’d really appreciate the help.

softwareguru answers:

The best Anti-Virus available is Vipre. Its fairly unknown but you can read more about it here.

You can actually get it for free by downloading the trial(Which is the FULL VERSION) and renewing your key every month(I timed how long it takes to do this, including waiting for the email and I got 40 seconds).

You don’t even have uninstall and reinstall. You simply go to extend subscription, enter the new key, and congratulations you have another 30 days. It uses the very little memory, has great scan times, amazing real time protection, and excellent definitions. It can be set to run automatically whenever you want(such as at 1 am), you can customize the virus scans, and you can use extra tools included, like a secure file eraser(they can’t be recovered with file recovery tools due to being written over numerous times on the hard drive). If something is blocked that you didn’t want to be blocked, you can simply restore it from quarantine or set exceptions.

To get it for free simply go here.

Enter an email address from here.

Wait a few seconds for the email to be received

Open the email and go to the link, and you have a download link and a 30 day key.

softwareguru answers:

Hi Alison,

Did you get that removed yet?

Qv06 Virus is a computer infection classified as browser hijacker. See if the following 2 programs help to remove this annoyance:

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode

http://general-changelog-team.fr/fr/downloads/finish/20-outils-de-xplode/2-adwcleaner

Double-click AdwCleaner.exe (on XP) or Right click and choose Run as administrator (on Vista and above) to run the tool.
Click Delete button.
Everything that was found will be deleted.

Follow up with the Junkware Removal Tool by thisisu

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/dl/131/

Disable your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking on XP or right click and select Run as Administrator on Vista/Win7 and above.
When the tool opens, follow the onscreen instructions for pressing any key to begin the scan and allow it to scan your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system’s specifications.

Make sure to reboot your computer after each scan to remove files deleted.

I’ll check back shortly to see if it worked for you.

Virus removal help?

I got infected by NewFolder.exe virus/ trojan and unable to detect / delete/ sanitize the same using many anti-virus tools. Any suggestions on effective free tools & about the functionality of this replicating virus/ trojan. Thanks-

softwareguru answers:

Here’s some ideas to make Internet Security Suite for free. Free is always the best.

————————————–…

1. For your Anti-Virus……(Always use only 1 A-V…You must NEVER use more than one anti-virus, Even an expired anti-virus can cause a major conflict…(did I mention that you MUST uninstall any old anti-virus products?)

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of “paid-for” anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer’s resources. And did I mention that it’s free!

Download here:
http://www.free-av.com/

Avoid an anti-virus called AVG (free version). It is wildly popular but has poor virus detection rates.

———————————-

2. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs……………SUPERAntiSpyware:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

3. For your Firewall……….(Always use only 1 software firewall)

A decent free firewall is Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0.21.329.

It is one of the few free firewalls that will work (and work well) on Vista as well as XP and 2000.

————————————-

4. And to help protect your computer from ever getting infected with malware in the first place………… (use them both)

SiteAdvisor warns you when visiting a potentionally malicious web-site:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/

———————————–

5. And always keep your Windows and all your installed software 100% updated and patched with all critical and security updates from the vendors THIS IS A MUST! In Internet Explorer just click Tools then Windows Updates.

Here is a little online (no download) security tool called The Secunia Software Inspector, that checks a computer for un-secure, un-updated and un-patched apps that may be installed on your computer.

The Secunia Software Inspector checks for possibly vulnerable programs like Adobe, Winamp, Java, Windows, Internet Explorer etc. And notifies if critical security updates are needed. !

Will work using IE, Opera or Firefox.

Use it once a month.

Pretty cool and free at:

Win 7 Anti-virus 2012 removal problem?

As of today, I started getting really annoying fake antivirus alerts from win 7 antivirus 2012. This program completely disables all my programs. Naturally, I went on google on another computer in search of a solution and I have found many guides to eliminate this virus but every guide requires me to go into safe mode. But even in safe mode this virus prevents me from doing anything. When I go in safe mode with networking and try to download the various solution programs to fix this problem, once again the fake antivirus is determined to keep me off the internet. So in short, is there anyone who knows what I can do to get rid of this annoyingly persistant virus?? Thanks!

Your Questions About Spyware Removal Freeware

Lisa asks…

Spyware programs?

What are some good spyware removers out there apart from Spybot and Ad-Aware?
Thanks

softwareguru answers:

Free ones?

Some free ones:
SUPERAntiSpyware Free.

AVG Anti-spyware Free.

AVG Anti-Rootkit Free.
AVG Anti-Rootkit is a powerful tool with state-of-the-art technology for detection and removal of rootkits. Rootkits are used to hide the presence of a malicious object like Trojans or keyloggers on your computer. If a threat uses rootkit technology to hide itself it is very hard to find the malware on your PC. AVG Anti-Rootkit gives you the power to find and delete the rootkit and to uncover the threat the rootkit is hiding.

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it’s fast and contains NO spyware or adware.

ClearAllHistory – clears browser history, cache, cookies, clipboard and remove other computer activity tracks.

**NOTE: Only have one antivirus program and one firewall installed on your computer.
Anti-adware/malware/spyware are ok to have more of.

Also scan with online scanners sometimes.

Bogus spyware?

We had a spyware alert come up telling us there were serious things found on my husbands website. We clicked all the links, and ended up being asked for money to get rid of these findings, although our internet security found nothing. Now we cannot get rid of it, and it is stopping my husband using his site, even his internet banking. He has done re-start, andall sorts, but it will not go away. neither of us is very up on computers, and we don’t know what to do next. Has anyone got any suggestions how to get rid of this scam spyware nuisance???
We have Macafee security, and we thought that was supposed to stop this sort of thing happening?
