Your Questions About Anti Spyware Software For Mac

Posted by softwareguru on July 31, 2014

Laura asks…

Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus for Mac?

Do I need them? Running OX 10.4.11 on a PowerBook G4 and want to know is it safe without them? Working with Mac for a couple of years now and always felt they were less susceptible to disease.
I get messages every so often from websites that my computer is at risk. What can you recommend for me as a download or an in-store purchase if necessary, for either Anti-Spy/Virus protection?
Anything free and safe would benefit most!
Thank you in advance for your honest help!

Thank you Darren09! Lot’s of info.
A few questions though….
#3 “crackz”, can you explain further?
Also #4 Do not run in Administrator mode?
You gave me info on PC not Mac?
Thank you for your help

softwareguru answers:

It’s pretty simple to understand why there are more viruses on Windows than on OS X: more people use Windows than OS X. Hackers generally target the biggest nail in order to reach a much larger audience.

There is no such thing as a “perfect” operating system. As more people move to mac computers, so do more hackeres exposing the security flaws. Every piece of software is going to have some kind of exploit, but there are several things you can do in order to keep yourself safe no matter what PC or operating system you use.

1. Be careful what type of sites you visit. There are many unscrupulous websites out there that will readily infect your machine with a virus or adware.

2. Instead of downloading music, go to the store and buy the CD or buy the MP3’s from legit sites. Not only will you avoid any financially difficult legal situation, you’ll also avoid any website that promises free MP3 downloads but only delivers viruses and adware.

3. Instead of looking for software cracks or serials online, look for coupons. The “crackz” scene is filled to the brim with malicious websites. You’re not safe when you’re visiting these “seedier” websites.

4. Do not run in Administrator mode. You should only run in Administrator mode when you’re installing hardware or software, but running in a lower security mode you’ll avoid a lot of the more invasive attacks.

Thank you!

softwareguru answers:

I don’t use anti-virus software, as it has been said, Macs don’t get viruses pretty often. The only protecting tool I use is ProteMac NetMine – it’s a firewall.

softwareguru answers:

Try a online antivirus scanner and a online anti-adware/malware/spyware scanner in safe mode with network to clean up your computer BEFORE you download anything. This because the program you download can get infected.

Disable “System Restore” for Windows Me and XP, then restart your PC to clean your system restore points for viruses, spyware, adware etc.

Now restart in safe mode.
To get in safe mode Press “F8” upon bootup.
Select “Safe mode with Networking”.
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html Enter(ok).
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
When that scan does not find anything you reboot again in safe mode with network.
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.ewido.net/en/ Enter(ok).
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.

**NOTE: Do NOT do anything else with your computer when scanning. This because you can start virus/adware/spyware/malware manually.

When no one of these scanners are showing anything you can reboot back to normal mode.
Turn on “System Restore”.

AVG Anti-spyware Free.

Spybot – Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven’t intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been “hijacked” (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don’t see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there’s no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Chris asks…

how do i get rid of spyware and trojan files?

so today my computer was acting wired. my wall paper is blank. computer is really slow. i cannot connected to the internet. this checking thing that i have on the computer tells me that i have spyware and 173 trojan files. i know that i need some anti spyware and anti virus but how can i download it when the computer doesnt connect to the internet. is it possilbe to download it in another computer then send it to the bad one? i am using my laptop at the moment.

softwareguru answers:

Download Spybot! Spybot Search and Destroy is free and really cleans up a lot of spyware….Spy ware is easy to pick up…..but a quick question…do you have an Anti-Virus program running? Never go on the internet without some protection….but even with that, it is easy to accumulate spyware…..usually people download free games and such and that is the end of it….spyware city!
Download Spybot…get the latest defenitions and run it!
It may take 30 minutes to run…but at the end, it will build a list of spyware that it detected, and clean it up.
If Spybot cannot clean it try AD Aware…..if that cannot do it, then your best bet is a reload….because in most cases..if it is so resistant and you have so much spyware comming back all the time..you will never be sure if you are 100% clean…a reload would help….Do you have backups of your documents and such?
Rule of Thumb
Make backups at least one a month….one a week if it has data that changes all the time (My home pc is just not that important)

Scan for spyware every week (Spybot would be my choice)
Scan for Viruses…full scan every week

If you do not have a firewall with your virus software, make sure Windows Firewall is turned on (IF you have XP or Vista)

Make sure your Security Patches for your operating system is up to date (set yourself up for automatic updates)

Defrag your disks and run check disk ever two weeks.

If you follow these rules…chances are your PC will remain pretty healthy!

Ken asks…

How can i get rid of the personal security virus/scam from my computer?

I have tried downloading various free virus scans but they are all blocked. I have tried putting them on a memory stick from another computer but the virus blocks the use of it. I have been advised to change the name of the file I am downloading but i don’t know how to. I am desperate. Please, all advice gratefully received.

Mary asks…

What is some good free adware/spyware etc detection and removal software?

Adaware is so ridiculously slow! I always used to use it but surely theres a better free tool by now?

softwareguru answers:

Adaware is not really that good compared to other free ones available. I used it for about a day before I uninstalled it and seeked an alternative.

I would recommend Spybot S&D. It offers real-time protection and it doesn’t take too long to scan.

Another good one is SUPERAntiSpyware. I am pretty sure that you have to pay an upgrade to get the real-time protection on this one.

And last, but not least, Malwarebytes’.

Your Questions About Virus Protection For Mac

Posted by softwareguru on July 31, 2014

Ruth asks…

I think I got a clickjacking virus. Will this affect my computer, or just my Facebook?

If it will affect my computer, is there a free virus protection thing that I can get for a Mac?
Yeah, it is on my Facebook, because I’ll see random pages that I didn’t “like” on my newsfeed, and I didn’t put them there. My computer’s not acting weird at all, but I thought it’d be best to ask since I don’t know much about the virus.

softwareguru answers:

I thought Macs were immune to viruses…

…whoops.

Just kidding, but I’m serious. Anyway, it wouldn’t affect your Facebook account; Facebook profiles don’t get viruses. What makes you think your computer is actually infected?

Edit: That sounds to me like someone else is actually using your account, not that it has some sort of infection on it. Change your password ASAP.

James asks…

What are the best types of laptops for a new college student?

Ok so I’m heading off to college and before I go I obviously need the essential laptop. I’m mainly looking at Dells and HP’s. I’ve worked on Mac‘s and realized that I don’t really like them and I’m also thinking about looking at Sony’s. But I really don’t know which is the best. Also what are the other things that I need to buy to go along with it? [virus protection, spy blocker, which edition of Windows?]

softwareguru answers:

I actually have a MacBook BUT I think Thinkpads (made by Lenovo, originally by IBM) are more reliable.

In fact, Macs seem to have the best customer service, but also have a lot of technical problems. Thinkpads don’t come with great service, but they tend to have fewer issues by far than any other brand.

Then again, if your college has computer labs, you might see if you can save a few hundred bucks by not buying a laptop right away. Try that out for a while and if you still need one then go for it.
