What’s a good online serviced for virus removal?

My sister appears to have a virus in her Dell computer. She opened a pop-up and that may very well be the problem. Her email says “no memory”.

Michael asks…

Whats a really good spyware removal program?

I need a really good, free spyware removal program. I’ve tried spysweeper, and adaware. They didn’t fix the problems. Pop ups are locking up my computer, I get 12 of them right away as soon as I open internet, plus its making my computer run super slow. Its my work computer so I need it running at peak performance. I know its some sort of spy program that was installed to my computer through the net somehow, but I can’t find it. Please help!

softwareguru answers:

Free programs such as Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE used to be at the top of the heap, but have fallen lately in effectiveness due to slowness in keeping up with the latest threats, and also somewhat inferior technology compared to some of the latest programs.

I prefer these:
1. A-Squared — free version of it does scans only (no shield) but it is very effective
2. Windows Live OneCare (no, really, it’s an MS product but it’s pretty slick) — has a very nice antispyware component
3. Spy Sweeper (commercial product) — one of the top products out there
4. AVG Anti-Spyware (as opposed to AVG Antivirus) — has a 30-day free trial; enough time to clean your system
5. Spyware Doctor — a commercial program

Also to a previous answerer here, AVG is NOT stopping free service in January for AVG Antivirus (which is the product you are obviously referring to — and which won’t help the question asker since it is not a virus problem, it’s most likely spyware). But AVG Antivirus 7.5 still has a free version. It’s on Grisoft’s site. I just installed it the other day.

Your Questions About Anti Spyware Software Definition

Posted by softwareguru on April 28, 2014

Mandy asks…

I had a virus and got rid of it after installing a new antivirus software. Could I still be at risk?

The new software has an antiphishing task. Could anyone view my personal information?

softwareguru answers:

Welll … It sort of depends on what programs (security programs you have) … SOME are not that good no matter what their homepage says … Sort answer (probably what I should have started with) is … YES .. This is not to say “OMG, your going to be infected …. SIGN OFF AND SHUT DOWN NOW!” … But more-less to echo another poster …. You’ll always be at risk online … Just use a good firewall + malware scanner + common sense + a good Antivirus and you will be mostly safe

These are a few tips to help secure your computer at least somewhat … .I am not saying none of these programs do not have false-alarms or you’ll be 100% protected all the time.. These are just a few tips.

PLEASE do not let people talk you into “you get what you pay for” .. With the few exceptions, most of my favorite and security site “best programs” are free.

Anti-viruses –
1) Avast – FREE – ( )
Pros: Considered by many tech to be the #1 free anti-virus. Great Detection rate and no significant lag on system resources

Cons: My laptop from 2002, has SLIGHT lag running Avast. (compared to Avira)

2) Avira – FREE – ( )
Pros: Great Detection; comparable to Avast’s; NO system lag on any of my computers that I have EVER run it on;

Cons: Sites and articles tend to deduct “points” for the fact they like Avast’s interface better. I find it Avira’s GUI very clean and easy to use, however.

Those are Free, but if you feel the need to want to pay for one (for whatever reason), try (3) Eset NOD32, which provides great protection and no system lag

4) MS Security Essentials- FREE –
Pro: Decent (although, not the best) Detection rate .. Better than scanners like Trend Micro, Mcafee, and Norton …; ?? – System Resource impact seem low, according to other users, but I can not comment on this. This has a much better detection rate than scanners like AVG

(EDITED) Cons: Forced me to download 60+MB of Defs, just to have ANY definitions at all. I am not sure why… I know even if they are not “100% up-to-date”, Avira and Avast do not do that. IF I had a bad installer, I will gladly remove this statement as a “CON”.

Firewall –
I would recommend Comodo’s Firewall ( ) 100% and Outpost ( ) makes a great firewall product and they have a free or pro version available. Both firewalls are easy to use and configure

Malware/Spyware related –
These are great programs to have, but do not confuse them with anti-viruses. AV’s can detect malware and these scanners COULD detect viruses, but my advice would be to have both types of scanners on your system.

The only two scanners I’d use for this are both freewares, the rest are honestly not needed.

MalwareBytes ( ) FREE Ed. And
Super AntiSpyware ( – FREE –
Great detection; most tutorials sites on removing malware, tell you to use Malwarebytes anyway;

I have seen people with AV scanners like Norton think they are malware free and they (with computer issues) scan with MB and then they find they are loaded with malware.

Maybe the only other addition would be Spyware Blaster( ) which is a freeware that helps prevent (to a degree) drive-by spyware active-x installs on various browsers ..

Betty asks…

What’s the best free security software to download onto a PC?

I’m getting a new laptop, a Dell Inspiron 17, and I won’t really be able to afford security software that you pay for. But I’ve heard that you can get good security software for free online. So what’s the best legit security software that you can download for free?

softwareguru answers:

Consumer Reports’s top honors 2009 went to a free three-pack of Avira’s AntiVir antivirus program, Microsoft’s Windows Defender antispyware software and the Spamfighter antispam program.

Avira AntiVir
Its scans are flexible, allowing the user to fully scan both internal and external hard drives, run a preloaded scan–for rootkits, for example–or customize a scan. The latest version introduces antispyware protections, scanning tech that can crack open “locked” files, improved internal security to prevent AntiVir’s files from being maliciously altered, and one-click threat removal–no more baby-sitting. AntiVir is still challenging to fully uninstall. Despite these hang-ups and the nag screen that follows definition file updates, AntiVir offers such effective protection and a well-rounded set of features that as long as the updates keep coming, it’ll be our first line of defense.

Windows Defender is software that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. Features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it’s detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive.

SPAMfighter has partnered up with Microsoft to build the strongest, safest, and most effective anti spam filter on the market. If you use Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Thunderbird and you want to get rid of spam, just install SPAMfighter

Spybot – Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven’t intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been “hijacked” (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don’t see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there’s no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

How do you remove Antimalware Doctor virus?

I have tried everything. I even downloaded malware bytes and superantispyware virus removal software. both scan and even say that they removed the virus. but after restarting the computer the annoying virus again pops up. How do I remove it?

softwareguru answers:

I don’t know any other solutions besides Malwarebytes/SuperAntiSpyware for the Antimalware doctor ]: … Make sure you try booting in safe mode (without networking) when you attempt to get rid of it or scan for it. Try see if it’s a startup item in msconfig (start -> run -> msconfig) try disabling it. Try ending it’s process with task manager and shift+deleting wherever the files are located. Try deleting its file dependencies.

Just throwing out things that might help.
